Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan led a first-half assault as the Chicago Bulls put together their best game of the playoffs, trouncing the Indiana Pacers, 106-87, in Game Five to regain control of the Eastern Conference finals. Pippen, who missed two crucial free throws at the end of Game Four, scored 17 of his 20 points in an outstanding all-around first half. He shot 7-of-12 from the field and again smothered Pacers point guard Mark Jackson, who managed five points. “Dealing with Monday night’s loss was very tough for me personally,” said Pippen, who had been shotting less than 40 percent from the field and under 50 percent from the line in the series. “I wanted to go and attack the basket tonight, use all the energy I had, to make up for the mistakes I made on Monday.” Jordan, who missed a three-pointer at the buzzer in Game Four and joined coach Phil Jackson in criticizing the referees afterwards, also scored 17 first-half points. He shot 12-of-20 from the field and finished with 29 points. “We came out tonight with something to prove,” Jordan said. “We decided to be the aggressors. With a 3-1 series lead, the Chicago Bulls looked primed to win their sixth championship on their home court. But Utah’s Karl Malone had other ideas. Malone hit 17 of 27 shots for a game-high 39 points and led the Jazz to a tight 83-81 win. Michael Jordan scored 28 points, but hit just 9 of 26 shots. Toni Kucoc led the Bulls with 30 points on 11 of 13 shooting. No other Bull scored in double figures. Scottie Pippen scored just 6 points on 2 of 16 shooting. The Jazz win forced a sixth game back in Utah. NOTE: My DVD cut off just before the end of the game. Sorry about the abrupt ending.

They ended years of frustration. They ended the Detroit Pistons’ two-year reign as champions. And now, the Chicago Bulls can begin thinking about playing in the NBA finals for the first time. Making it look easy, the Bulls completed a four-game sweep of the Pistons with a 115-94 victory today at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Chicago dominated the Eastern Conference finals from start to finish, brushing aside the proud Pistons as if they were a nuisance instead of the defending champions. “To say that this is unexpected, to sweep this team, is an understatement,” said Phil Jackson, Chicago’s coach. “But after losing to this team for three years, I think we deserve a shot.” The Pistons tried physical play, lineup changes and anything else they could think of to avoid being dethroned at home. None of it worked. The Bulls were too determined, too poised and too good to be denied. And now, Michael Jordan (29 points on 11-for-17 shooting along with nine rebounds, nine assists) and the Bulls have an impressive 11-1 record in the playoffs. “We didn’t want it any other way,” said Jordan, who added more luster to his extraordinary seven-year career by reaching the NBA finals for the first time. “We wanted to beat Detroit.
